IPv6 - Switching from static to dynamic prefix - revisited¶
In 2023 I wrote about me switching from one provider to another after having 9 years of one single IPv6 prefix /48. The earlier article assumed to got to a dynamic prefix. At the end I decided I would really have to go static. TLDR In the end I got a static prefix by Deutsche Telekom. It's a 1000/500 Mbit/s GPON connection FTTH.
Well that doesn't sound that bad at all, BUT DOES IT?
Just in short: I have have a quite colorful mixture of devices that
- are configured statically on purpose
- are configured statically because that's the only way the device supports IPv6
- are configured statless via SLAAC
- used to be configured via DHCPv6 with a static assignemt. Well that was not fun at all. (DUID)
- do not support IPv6 at all
IPv6 Prefix Size Deutsche Telekom¶
My old link by NetAachen gave me one /48. I really believe for most customers one /56, as I get them now by Telekom, are too small for my needs. It's only 256 times /64, duh? I want to be my own provider if I wanted to and give myself out at least a couple of /56es. I understand for the majority of people one /56 is even too much, as for some it's a perfect fit. For me it's actually too small. Well I can do stuff in that section, but I can do LESS stuff. Simple as that.
The main struggle¶
It's the amount of effort and time I have to invest. Well as this provider isn't a good fit for me. More on that later.
I'm 100% sure that I will not keep that contract for more than the two years I signed up for. Long story short.
The line is slow.
It's really fucking slow but HOW?. I'm sure you already guessed it. The latency is just horrible..In order for me to have time for the transition between providers I gave myself time by not cancelling the old contract. So right now I am at the very same point in real space two times. One time Telekom, the other one NetAachen. Guess what. They route myself via London. From one fucking place to the exact fucking space in my fucking same house. If I use v6 for the connection it travels across - can you believe fucking - Sweden. So what I did in order to migrate more softly a wireguard tunnel became reality that would connect both of those routers to a virtual line that should in theory operate at a formidable rate, not only in terms of data transfer rates but also in latency.
